  • Thermal Modeling: Simulate heat generation, conduction, and cryogenic cooling performance under realistic operational conditions.
  • Multiphysics Build and validate coupled FE models to capture transient effects such as current redistribution and localized heating.
  • Instability Modeling: Implement and validate numerical frameworks to simulate quench initiation, propagation, and protection strategies.
  • Collaborate with design teams to validate models and integrate insights into system development

Desirable Qualifications

  • Degree (MSc or PhD) in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Computational Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in multiphysics and transient simulation, particularly electromagnetic–thermal coupling.

Materials Development

Experimental Research Materials Scientist

Help build lower-cost superconducting wire and cable for high-field magnets, taking materials from powder to prototype in our London lab.

Location
London, UK
Type
Full-time
Workplace
On-site
Salary
Competitive + equity

About the role

We are looking for a Research Scientist to help accelerate our mission by bringing expertise and experience to key points in the magnet development and fabrication pipeline. The successful candidate will work at the interface of materials science, wireprocessing, microstructural characterisation, and superconducting performance. The role will focus on understanding how precursor materials, powder processing, wire deformation, thermal processing, and densification influence the microstructure and electrical performance of powder-in-tube superconducting wires.

Wire and cable R&D will be a major focus of our next phase of development, so experience turning materials into real conductors is central to this role. This is a lab-focused role in a small, fast-moving team. You will own experiments end to end, from sample preparation through wire and cable fabrication to measurement and analysis, and your results will feed directly into materials selection, conductor design and process decisions.

An ideal candidate would have experience with a suite of characterisation techniques such as but not exclusive to;

  • X-ray diffraction, including phase identification and refinement
  • Scanning electron microscopy, ideally with EDS
  • Mechanical testing (for example tensile, bend or hardness testing)
  • Powder characterisation (for example particle size distribution, morphology and density)
  • Powder processing (for example milling, mixing, pressing and sintering)

Our Principles

  • Mission first. Abundant clean energy matters more than anyone's ego. Plans change and setbacks happen; we need people who are resilient, agile and comfortable in discomfort.
  • We challenge, then commit. Internally, we value rigorous intellectual honesty, respectfully communicated. Once a decision is made, we align completely and execute as one.
